India is moving into the business of manufacturing cargo containers, a
segment dominated by China, as part of the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
Last year, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways formed a committee to examine the feasibility of making containers at Bhavnagar in Gujarat and developing it into a manufacturing hub for the steel boxes, That have become the global standard for shipping a variety of goods across ships, rail and road.
At Bhavnagar, the centre has set up pilot projects for its manufacturing. The initiative aimed at attaining self-reliance in container production eyes Rs 1,000 crore investment from private players and looks to create one lakh jobs.
"India requires about 3-5 lakh containers every year.There is no container production in India and we have to depend mainly on China which is a global producer. Now we want to develop Bhavnagar in Gujarat as a container hub and we have selected 10 places there for its production on a pilot basis," Ports, Shipping and Waterways Minister Mansukh Mandaviya told The pilot project has been successful, he said.

RAW MATERIAL
Shipping ministry has talked to large steel players in this regard. Talks with global steel giant ArcelorMittal which has assured to provide the specifie grade of steel for container manufacturing.
ArcelorMittal is the largest global steel maker with 89.8 million tonnes erude steel produetion in 2019 & 18 steel manufacturing units. Bhavnagar distriet in Gujarat houses Alang ship-breaking yard, one of the biggest recycling yards in the world.
WHO WILL PURCHASE?
"We had a meeting with shipliners associations. Shipping liner associations have assured us that they will purchase the containers providing reasonable profits.They have assured us that they will not import it once indigenous production starts," Mansukh Mandaviya said.
INDIA'S CONTAINER NEEDS
China makes about 90% of the global shipping containers. CIMC is the largest container manutacturer with a market share of 40%. Other players include Singamas, COSCO and CXIC. Currently, India sources its entire container needs from China at prices ranging from RS. 2,39,760-454.545 depending on the size of the container.
India's external trade grew to $838.46 billion in FY20 and the increasing trade is translating into higher demand for
containerisation due to their efficiencies.
The country will require approximately 60,0oo new containers between 2021 and 2026, an annual addition of about 10,000 per year.

The move assumes significance amid reports of global shortages of containers with Indian containerised trade taking a hit owing to the staggered supply and demand shocks across geographies as per logistic majors.
