armed ethnic group that controls the
southeastern region, said fighter jets
attacked Day Pu No in Papun district, an area held by its Brigade 5 forces, at around 8 p.m., forcing villagers to flee.

The Karen National Union a political
organisation with an armed wing, the
Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA), that claims to represent the Karen people of Myanmar (Burma).

The official language and primary medium of instruction of Burma is Burmese (65%). Multiple languages are spoken in Burma, and include Shan (6.4%), Karen (5.2 ), Kachin (1.8%). Chin (1.6%), Mon (1.5%), and Rakhine (1.5%). English is also spoken, particularly by the educated urban elite, and is the secondary language learnt in government schools. Recent years, the education of Chinese language has been
recovered, after long-term limitation from the government of Myanmar


KAREN NATIONAL LIBERATION ARMY

The KNLA was reported to have had a strength of roughly 5,000 soldiers in 2006, 6,000 in 2012 and 7,000 in 2014.
The army is divided into seven brigades and a Special Force' reserved for special operations.

FOREIGNERS

A number of foreigners have gone to Myanmar to fight for the KNLA.

Dave Everett, a former Australian SAS soldier, fought for the KNLA and was later arrested in Australia for trying to steal money to fund the KNLA. Des Ball, Professor at ANU, has advised them on military strategy.

Thomas Bleming, an American, claims to have fought for the Karen and has written a book called War in Karen Country.
